Several Trinitian Media and Communication students participated in the second Student in Social Journalism Workshop, held last February 20-21, 2016 at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Tagaytay City.
The representatives consist of Trinity Observer (TO) Associate Editor Daniel Gonzaga (AB Broadcasting-IV), MCO Public Relation Officer Katrina Bulos (AB Communication-III), and MCO Volunteer Camille Cabal (AB Communication-III).
Organized by the Manila Broadcasting Company, the mother company of 90.7 Love Radio and DZRH 666 AM, the Student in Social Journalism Workshop aimed to “broaden the base of responsible citizen journalist” and was attended by over 150 campus journalist, communication students and student council officials from various colleges and universities across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
In a statement by the Media and Communication Organization (MCO), the University’s co-curricular organization for the Broadcasting and Communication students. The University’s representatives are recommended based on their journalism skills and student leadership role in the University. Ms. Aly Narvaez, DZRH executive producer and project head for the said workshop sent the invite for the said Journalism workshop.
Trinitian Delegates In-action and On-air
During the said seminar, the Trinitian delegates participated in several question and answer portions during the workshop. The participants for the said workshop can represent and report news for DZRH.
In a forum with Keynote Speaker and Senatorial Candidate Kiko Pangilinan, Gonzaga asked “if the Media and History might be demonizing the Marcos administration due to how the Martial Law is emphasized?” The said question later became a talked about topic during the seminar, meanwhile Cabal asked Congressman JV Ejercito on how the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) should be perceived aside from being event organizers.
On the other hand, Gonzaga is chosen to be on-board along with other student leaders and journalist in a special episode of Boses ng Kabataan, DZRH’s youth infotainment program where talked about how the youth uses social media in addressing political and personal issues. Gonzaga emphasized how social media is often used for ranting instead of disseminating relevant information.
About the Workshop
The workshop emphasized how social journalism can be used in promoting people empowerment, economic movement, risk reduction and Science. The said Journalism workshop consist of various lectures featuring legislators, press attaché and radio personalities.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cesar Chavez, DZRH Associate Vice President for News and Current Affairs stressed the importance of being a competitive and well-equipped media student, in order to be an integral part of media. He also stressed the importance of critical-thinking in delivering timely and accurate facts for the Filipino people. ###
