By virtue of CHEd Memorandum Order No. 20, Series of 2016 Trinity University of Asia was granted a fresh three-year Autonomous Status by the Commission on Higher Education, effective from April 1, 2016 – May 31, 2019. Fifty-two other Higher Education Institutions received a three-year autonomous status while only three received five years. CHED regularly reviews its autonomous listing. TUA has been autonomous since 2009.
Having an Autonomous status exempts universities from the regular monitoring and evaluation by CHED, given the priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives and assistance, and is authorized to confer honorary degrees to deserving individuals. Additional benefits include the privilege to determine, design, and prescribe their own curricula, offer new programs and put up branches or satellite campuses without having to secure permits.
