CUAC 12th International Triennial Conference

CUAC 12th International Triennial Conference

Introduction to Triennial Theme

Ever since humans emerged, with Homo habilis (2.5 mya) we have been defined by our tool-making abilities. We’ve used tools to reshape the world around us. In just the last 500 years, or so, first the printing press, then the power of steam, followed by the internal combustion engine, and lastly the computer, have brought about profound changes. And changes not just for those directly involved in these industries, but for the whole, global society. Now, with the advent of meaningful Artificial Intelligence (AI) we stand at the beginning of another revolution that will send ripples of transformation right through society. The way we teach, and research will alter, but more profoundly, the place and purpose of we humans could change as well. For AI represents the emergence not just of a new powerful tool, but one that can potentially act to develop itself through its own decisions. It is more than an invention because, as Mustafa Suleyman (CEO of Microsoft AI) has affirmed, it has the potential to be endlessly inventive.

No one can predict the future with certainty, however this Triennial Conference asks if, as educators committed to furthering of human flourishing, we are ready for what the next decade might bring. Through the expertise of our keynote speakers, and by promoting conversations that draw on the rich diversity of insights of CUAC members, this Triennial aims to leave us better prepared for whatever lies over the horizon.

The Revd Jeremy Law, DPhil
Dean of Chapel, Canterbury Christ Church University
CUAC Distinguished Fellow

Conference Speakers

Revd Dr Michael DeLashmutt
Dean of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, Associate Professor of Sacred Theology, and Senior VP at
The General Theological Seminary, New York, USA

His teaching and research explore the intersection of theology and everyday life, with particular attention to technology, material culture, and the formation of Christian imagination. His most recent book, A Lived Theology of Everyday Life (Cascade Press), examines how faith takes embodied form through ordinary practices. He is currently completing a new monograph, Theology and Technology: After Intelligence, drawing on over two decades of scholarship at the intersection of theology, artificial intelligence, and information technology.

Revd Dr Jeremy Law
Dean of Chapel at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK

Following a first degree and postgraduate work in geology, Jeremy read theology as part of his ordination training and subsequently completed an Oxford DPhil on the theology of Jürgen Moltmann under the supervision of Rowan Williams. His published work includes reflections of the purpose of Education, the theology of human evolution, and ecological theology. Jeremy is currently working on the way in which Christian theology needs to reconceive itself in the light of the ecological crisis. In 2015 he became the first Distinguished Fellow of CUAC.
